Our eye is a lamp.
Micah Abeloe
“No one lights a lamp and puts it where it will be hidden, or
under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those
who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your
body. When your eyes are healthy your whole body is full of
light. But, when they are unhealthy your whole body is full of
darkness. See to it, then, that the light that is in you is not
darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and
no part of it dark, then it will be just as full of light as when a
light shines its light on you.” Luke 11:33-36.
What I have learned about this bit of scripture is that the eye
is a metaphor for our perception or worldview . Jesus tells
us that what we take in and how we perceive things will
dictate how much light we let it in to ourselves, which in
turn will dictate how much light we put off. He also warns us
to not let what is coming into us be anything but light, lest,
everything in us be darkness.
Our perception of our faith in Jesus will dictate how we will
live our lives. Our perception of what Jesus did on the cross
will dictate how we view our selves and the rest of the world.
And our perception of ourselves will dictate our relationship
with our Father God.
We must always make sure that what we are seeing and
perceiving is the truth. We can’t afford to let anything but
the word of God define how we will live and view life and
others. We must learn what the absolute truth of life in
Jesus is and live by it. We must allow the grace of God to
shift our perspective to line up with His perspective and live
Questions:
- What are some places where the worldly perception and a
godly perception are different?
- In what areas of your thought life do you need the light of
God shined on?
- How can you allow the Holy Spirit to change your
perspective on these things?
